The Koh Samui Regatta will again host the grand finale of the Asian Yachting Grand Prix Championships with the dates set from the 1st to 7th June 2008.

The current season has already got off to a flying start and sees Hong Kong skipper Frank Pong taking an early lead, with his 75 ft. yacht Jelik, following his recent success at the Phuket Kings Cup. Hot on his heels is Aussie Ray Roberts with his Malaysian built DK46 ‘Quantum Racing’, renewing his assault on the Asian circuit. Meanwhile the co-owned Nick Burns / Fred Kinmoth ‘Fortis Mandrake’ is also vying for position a few points back, after three of the eight rounds have been completed. Last years Koh Samui Regatta champion, Bill Bremner, is currently awaiting the arrival from the U.S. of his TP52 which has aptly been named ‘Foxy Lady IV’ and sees him chomping at the bit to get back on the water. The arrival of this boat will see the TP52’s emerging as a dominant force in Asian waters and together with Sam Chan’s ‘Ffree Fire 52’ could see a highly competitive Grand Prix shoot-out on Samui at season end.

Callum Laing, the new owner of the Koh Samui Regatta, is quick to point out his plans to take the Tropical Island Regatta to new heights, whilst maintaining the same ‘laid-back’ island style of years gone by. ‘We really appreciate the huge effort the many international participants make to attend the Samui Regatta year on year and guarantee another great event in 2008’, Laing was noted as saying. He also acknowledged the tremendous input of the Island Sponsors and businesses that contribute to make the event such a success. Bangkok based MobyElite will be running the event whilst, local Samui sailing celebrity Francesco Brancaccio has been appointed to head up the island management team, with Aussie Race Officer Tony Denham making his 3rd return to take charge on the water. Renowned International Judge, Mark Pryke, also from Australia, brings his vast knowledge and experience in Asian regattas to bear, returning as head of the International Jury. Meanwhile long serving directors of the event, Marc Ribail and Peter Plant will be working tirelessly to ensure a seamless transition for the new management.
