Leigh and Lowton Sailing Club is run by its members to promote and enjoy the sport of sailing. Membership is open to people of all ages and abilities – from champions to complete novices. The club is mainly a racing club, but anyone who wants to sail a dinghy or windsurfer is welcome. The club is open to all monohulls less than 21’. The club is situated at the western end of Pennington Flash, which is a 70 hectare lake near Leigh in Lancashire, within easy reach of the M6 and the A580 West Lancs road
Members come from a wide area including Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Yorkshire, Cheshire and Merseyside. The club is an RYA training Centre for both sailing and power-boating, and an RYA Sailability Centre. The club therefore caters for all ages, abilities and aptitudes, and actively encourages youth sailing. As a member you can sail at any time except for those days designated ‘Flash Closures’ of which there are about 6 in a year.
Leigh and Lowton is a handicap boat racing club, although in the summer the RS400’s and Solo’s are sailed as fleets on Sundays. Summer racing takes place on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, and Wednesday evenings. Sailing also takes place on Friday evenings, but is of a more leisurely ‘messing about in boats’ nature with no racing – still with a safety boat in attendance. Winter racing is on Sunday afternoons starting at 12:30 to which visitors are welcome.
