Tendering District Council recently announced a scheme to close all local slipways or access to slipways from 1st June 2003, as they found it impossible to police the watersport areas effectively due to a small minority of irresponsible users. Gary Slater, current Chairman of Clacton Watercraft Club approached the Council and with much negotiation it was agreed that a club could be formed to regulate the slipway and craft using Martello Bay.
Many issues had to be addressed before the council would recognize the club. Vehicles being left on the beach was a major concern along with guarantees of appropriately trained and documented members. Clacton Watercraft Club is now affiliated to the RYA and is in the process of becoming the only RYA PWC Training Centre between Southend and Norfolk. The club is still in talks with the council and hope to have larger parking facilities available in the near future.
