We race a variety of dinghy classes as well as having an active yacht cruising membership.
The Dragonfly is the jewel of the Deben. The boat was built for the Waldringfield Sailing Club in the late 1940’s and over a fifteen year period 45 boats were build to a classic clinker-built design.
Wayfarers have raced at Waldringfield for more than 20 years and now the Club probably has the largest fleet of regularly racing Wayfarers in the UK.
At Waldringfield the Squib fleet currently have eighteen boats registered with the National Squib Owners’ Association, which is around the national average. The fleet sails on Saturday afternoons and Wednesday evenings and has its own class trophies for each race series. The class sails one race on a Saturday as opposed to the club’s dinghies, which have two races. Squibs have their own start at the end of the Dinghy sequence invariably with a committee boat start providing adequate room for the larger boats.
The Cadet Dinghy has been sailing on the River Deben for many years and with the class celebrating its 60th year this year it is still a very popular choice for children at WSC today. The Cadet is also a very competitive class on a national scale with the a good history of champions from the UK and WSC.
The Laser fleet at WSC is an active race fleet with good turnouts on both Saturday afternoon and Wednesday evening racing.
The Yacht Class of the club currently consists of about 125 members, ranging in age from those in their thirties to those in their eighties! Some of us are purely social members, some ex-dinghy sailors and there are even some intrepid long-distance sailors, but we all have that common theme, the lure of the sea and freedom. It is not even necessary to own your own yacht or motorboat to become a member, as there are opportunities to join in any of the functions, which could include crewing for the owners of the cruisers or racers.
