FOUR J CLASS YACHTS LINE UP FOR THE SUPERYACHT CUP PALMA 2009
www.thesuperyachtcup.com @ Mon Sep 29 14:30:00 +0100 2008
Four J Class yachts, including the new Huisman-built Hanuman, have communicated their intention to participate in The Superyacht Cup 2009 in Palma, June 24-27. It will be the first time the four J’s, Ranger, Velsheda, Shamrock V and Hanuman will race against each other.
Ranger and Velsheda have taken part in several Superyacht Cup events in previous years and next year these highly competitive rivals will be joined by the two additional yachts, racing under the new J Class handicap system developed by Gerry Dijkstra and managed by the Wolfson Unit at Southampton University. Hanuman is currently nearing completion at the Royal Huisman shipyard in the Netherlands and will have her first regatta outing in Palma. After time-out of the J Class racing scene, Shamrock V has chosen to make her comeback at The Superyacht Cup 2009.
“It is very exciting the J Class fleet have chosen The Superyacht Cup Palma as part of their regatta schedule for 2009” commented SYC Event Director Patrick Whetter. “The timing of our event at the end of June next year fits well with their racing programs following the Caribbean Season, it will be a spectacular sight to watch them racing in the Bay of Palma”.
2009 will be the 13th year for The Superyacht Cup and 11 yachts have already registered. The fleet of yachts will be berthed in the new central location in the heart of Palma at Muelle Viejo, directly in front of the cathedral and the historic old town district of the city.
Before then however, a 10 strong fleet will meet in the Caribbean in December for the third edition of the The Superyacht Cup Antigua (9-12th December). Two new yachts will be making their debut in Antigua, Perini Navi’s new P2 and the latest launch from Wally Yachts, the 148’ Tripp designed Saudade. Timoneer, Savannah, Wild Horses and Sojana are also planning to start their Caribbean season with The Superyacht Cup in Antigua.

The 3rd Superyacht Cup Antigua will be held from December 9th – 12th, in Nelson’s Dockyard on the beautiful Caribbean island of Antigua. Timed to follow on from the Antigua Yacht Charter Show (December 4th – 9th), the regatta is a great way to open the new season by enjoying three days of racing with perfect trade-wind conditions and spectacular scenery. The evening’s social activities bring the owners, captains, crew and guests altogether every afternoon after sailing for informal, lively dock parties, enjoying the best of the Caribbean hospitality.
This year 10 to 12 yachts are expected to take part, and already confirmed is the recently launched ‘P2’, the 38m/125’ sloop designed by Philippe Briand and built by Perini Navi at their newly renovated Beconcini Facility in La Spezia, Italy. The yacht splashed early this month and will be undergoing tuning and training sessions this summer before heading across the Atlantic to the Caribbean for The Superyacht Cup Antigua. The yacht is owned by an experienced sailing family who cruised the world extensively on their previous boat, ‘Perseus’. Now with their new, elegant, performance-cruising yacht, the owners and their two young sons will continue their racing and cruising adventures in superyacht regatta destinations around the world.
Build Captain, Jonathan Kline explained, “The Superyacht Cup and other Maxi and Bucket events will be a highlight for everyone involved with Team P2; the owner and his family plan to invite friends and a handful of talented racing sailors to compete together in an atmosphere of learning and excitement. The Superyacht Cup Antigua will be a great opportunity for us to test P2 (hull number one of a new series by Briand and Perini Navi) in the big seas and trade winds of the Caribbean. We are all looking forward to it very much.”
Last year’s winner, Sojana, the 35m ketch owned by Peter Harrison will be back to defend her title, sailed by her experienced international crew, she is sure to put in a good performance.

THE SUPERYACHT CUP ANNOUNCES NEW VENUE AND DATES FOR 2009
www.thesuperyachtcup.com @ Fri Jun 20 09:10:00 +0100 2008
The Organisers of The Superyacht Cup have now confirmed that the popular Palma edition of the regatta will move to a new venue in the heart of Palma from 2009 and for the next three years at least.
The 2009 Superyacht Cup Palma will take place from 24-27th June at Muelle Viejo (also known as Pier 46), situated directly opposite the old town of Palma, close to the Cathedral. The dock provides berthing for up to 25 yachts and is just 5 minutes from the airport.
“We have been looking forward to securing this venue for some years” commented Patrick Whetter, SYC Event Director. “The Muelle Viejo dock could not be more central to Palma and has all the facilities we need including easy access to the famous old town, hotels and restaurants.”
Last week, 13 yachts competed at the Superyacht Cup at the Dique del Oeste, the same dock used for last year’s event where 52 yachts took part in the largest ever superyacht regatta.
“The 2007 event was quite unique” continued Whetter, “ The overwhelming feedback we received from owners was that June was the best time for the event in Palma as it ties in with many of the yachts arriving from the Caribbean and preparing for the summer season in the Mediterannean”.
The 2009 Superyacht Cup Palma will follow a similar format to this year; a 4 day regatta with 3 days racing in the Bay of Palma. The regatta village on the dock will provide the ideal venue for the famous Superyacht Cup ‘dockside parties’ such as the Kiwi BBQ and Paella Party.
In the meantime, The Superyacht Cup Antigua will take place from 10-13th December 2008 in the historic Nelson’s Dockyard to mark the beginning of the Caribbean season.
