The Springfield Yacht and Canoe Club began as the Springfield Canoe Association in 1850 in a boathouse on a raft rented from Mr. W. Spencer at the foot of Elm St. in Springfield Massachusetts adjacent to the landing of the riverboat "Sylvia". When these accommodations became too small, the Association built their own 50’ x 20’ floating boathouse which they occupied until 1892.
