The Royal Irish Yacht Club was founded in 1831. The first Commodore was the redoubtable Marquis of Anglesey, who commanded the cavalry at the Battle of Waterloo, where a shell shattered his right leg. He exclaimed to Wellington, on horseback close by, "By God Sir, I've lost my leg". Wellington removed his telescope from his eye, considered the mangled limb and said, "By God Sir, so you have".
